    [Corn: a vegetable, a whole grain, and a fruit] Ohio State University Extension Educators Timothy McDermott, Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Jennifer Lobb, Family and Consumer Sciences, are collaborating on a new video series that examines how to grow and cook fresh seasonal produce. As most of us know, even though it’s almost fall, nothing tastes more like summer in Ohio than grilled sweet corn.   2. Ohio Falls Coalition Grant

    Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Educators Lorrissa Dunfee, Belmont County, and Michelle Treber, Pickaway County, recently received a $4,000 grant from the Ohio Falls Coalition to promote the overall health and wellness of senior citizens in their counties. The program, Bingocize, encourages movement and focuses on fall prevention and health education messages. Grant funds, managed by Belmont County’s health department, will be used to train Ohio State University Extension professionals and community partners for delivery in any county. Additionally, the funding will cover the Bingocize program materials and provide environmental supports such as grab bars for participants who successfully complete the program.

  4. College Savings Options

    For many, a college education is something they dream of, and with proper planning, it can become a reality. According to The Federal Reserve (May 2019) the typical amount of education debt in 2018, among those with any outstanding balances, was between $20,000 and $24,999. COVID-19 has had an impact on all of us, especially our teens. OSUE educators have created a video series with information about life skills with details on basic car maintenance, doing laundry, cleaning a bathroom, folding a fitted bed sheet and making healthy snacks.     Many stores are now offering more ways to shop. A great way to shop for items you need without having to go into a store is with online ordering. Online ordering allows you to choose the exact items you need without having to shop in store. The prices online are the same as in the store at most stores, although some do charge slightly more for online ordering. The cost for these services ranges from no cost to $4.95 for pick up (not available at all locations) and delivery costs range from $5.95 to $9.95 per order, or Walmart offers unlimited delivery for $12.95 per month (no limit on deliveries). <Read More + video...>

  9. Healthy Food for Less than $2 per Meal (Part 2)

    Three weeks ago, I wrote about stocking up for staying at home. I had gone shopping on March 13, after being away for over a week. Because many grocery shelves were bare, I had to make some substitutions and compromises and to shop at three different stores in Columbus to get items that would provide weeks of healthy meals. I focused on getting fresh and frozen essentials: whole grains (including low-sugar cereals), beans, fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, healthy fats, and spices and condiments to make is all taste great.
