Rural Ohio Program Helps Residents Manage Diabetes Through Practical Education

For Doug and Becky Share, everyday cooking has become a key part of managing diabetes, thanks to Dining with Diabetes, an Ohio State University Extension program offering hands-on nutrition education. Becky, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2020, said the program filled gaps left by traditional medical guidance by focusing on realistic, home-based eating habits.

The Family and Consumer Sciences program, serving about 300 participants statewide each year, is especially vital in rural areas like Coshocton County, where access to specialized care is limited.

Through partnerships with Coshocton Regional Medical Center, local educators provide cooking demonstrations, shared meals and lifestyle guidance. Participants report improved confidence, healthier routines and, in some cases, reduced need for medication, highlighting the program’s impact beyond the classroom.
